Practical Information
Getting Around
Domestic flights connect Port Vila and Luganville (book with Air Vanuatu in advance). On Efate and Santo, rent a car for flexibility or hire local drivers/taxis for day trips - many attractions require 4WD vehicles. Minibus taxis operate in Port Vila and Luganville for short trips. Most tour operators include transportation to remote attractions like Millennium Cave. Walking is practical within town centers. Inter-island travel requires advance planning as flight schedules are limited.
Book Ahead
Book domestic flights 2-3 months ahead, especially during peak season. Reserve Millennium Cave tours at least 3-4 days in advance. The Summit zipline and Roawia Turtle Tours should be booked 1-2 days ahead. Accommodation in peak season (June-September) should be reserved early. Other attractions accept walk-ins but calling ahead is recommended.
Packing Essentials
Water shoes for blue holes and cave exploration, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, waterproof phone case or camera bag, quick-dry clothing, light rain jacket, modest clothing for village visits, snorkeling gear (though rentals available), daypack for tours, first aid basics, and cash in vatu as cards aren't widely accepted outside Port Vila
Total Budget
$1,460-1,920 for 7 days (excluding international flights)
Customize Your Trip
Budget Version
Stay in guesthouses and budget accommodations ($40-60/night), eat primarily at local markets and simple restaurants, skip the distillery and zipline, use public minibus transport where possible, and focus on free or low-cost attractions like beaches and some blue holes. Camp or stay in village homestays on Santo. Prepare your own picnic lunches from market produce. Total budget can be reduced to $900-1,200 for the week.
Luxury Upgrade
Stay at premium resorts like Le Life Resort, Vanuatu and upscale beachfront properties with private beaches and spas. Book private guided tours for all activities including helicopter transfers to Millennium Cave. Enjoy fine dining experiences with wine pairings, sunset cruises, and spa treatments. Arrange private snorkeling charters and consider adding a few days at exclusive outer island resorts. Include scuba diving at Santo's famous SS President Coolidge wreck. Budget $400-600+ per day.
Family-Friendly
Focus on easier blue holes like Nanda and Matevulu with gentle access. Replace Millennium Cave with shorter nature walks or Top Rock for manageable climbing. The Summit offers kid-friendly activities alongside ziplines. Extend time at Eden On The River for relaxed swimming. Choose family bungalows with kitchen facilities. Add beach days and sandcastle building. The turtle tours are perfect for children. Many resorts offer kids' clubs and family activities. Cultural tours welcome children and provide educational experiences.
